You can get higher enhanced annuity rates for ill health, and we’ve plenty of examples on the enhanced annuity rates page. Your medical condition(s) might not be shown, but you are able to get a good idea of the higher annuity rates you might receive. Diabetes, for example, can result in annuity rates up to 30% higher, asthma up to 10%. There are actually over 1,500 medical conditions that can be considered. Examples: Alzheimer’s, angina, arthritis, blood pressure, various cancers, COPD, cholesterol, DVT, heart attack or stroke, heart disease, kidney complaints, leukemia, liver complaints, Parkinson’s, and rheumatism.

You need to be prepared to fully disclose your medical condition(s) to get the best enhanced annuity rates. Have you had a health check recently? Did it reveal anything that might effect the annuity rates you’re offered? The average increase in annuity income from enhanced annuity rates compared to standard annuity rates is around 22%, so don’t miss out. And, annuity rates 50% higher aren’t uncommon for more serious medical problems.

The following list has been put together to provide you with an indication of the kind of medical conditions that can be considered for higher enhanced annuity rates. The list is not exhaustive by any means and many medical conditions that are not listed can also be considered. You could also qualify for higher enhanced annuity rates if you smoke, have high blood pressure or cholesterol problems. It’s important when you request an annuity quote that you inform the adviser of any relevant details as this can impact greatly on the annuity rates you’re offered.

The higher enhanced annuity rates can apply to Alzheimers, Bi-polar Disorder, Blood Pressure, Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) or Brain haemorrhage (ALS), Cerebrovascular – Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), Cerebrovascular – Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), Dementia (All types), Diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2, Haemochromatosis, Angina, Heart – Aortic aneurysm or abdominal aortic, Atrial Fibrillation, Heart Attack or Stroke, Heart – AV block, Heart – Brachycardia or Bradycardia, Asbestosis, Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Chronic Bronchitis, COPD, Emphysema, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Schizophrenia, amongst others. For example, if you have diabetes you could get annuity rates up to 30% higher, whereas asthama can lead to annuity rates around10% higher.

Don’t buy pension annuity rates from Aviva and Saga just because they’re advertising or you know the name. Neither of them can offer you a choice of annuity rates to compare so it’s likely you’ll miss out on getting the best deal and the best annuity rates. Being able to compare annuity rates from different companies is important. It presents you with the best opportunity of getting the highest annuity income. You can choose the annuity quote that offers you the best deal for your circumstances. We’ll compare annuity quotes for you from some of the leading UK annuity providers.

Buying an annuity directly from an insurance company or from an annuity service that only offers one insurance company’s annuities could prove to be a costly mistake in terms of lost retirement income, so taking your annuity from Aviva or Saga could be a mistake. Annuity rates do vary tremendously between different insurance companies. No single company offers the best annuity rates for all scenarios. Company A, which could be Aviva, might offer the best rates for a male aged 65, but not for a male aged 70. Company B, which could be Saga, might offer the best rates for a £50,000 pension fund, but not for £100,000.

Don’t restrict yourself to just checking out pension annuity rates from one company. You’ll be relying on one company, one annuity quote, competitive or otherwise. You could miss out on the best rates. Remember, your current pension company won’t offer you the best rates. You will find higher annuity rates elsewhere. Also, if you suffer from ill health, if you’re overweight, if you smoke regularly or drink regularly, or if you live in certain postcode areas you’ll be entitled to higher annuity rates, and the increase can be very worthwhile. annuity rates in general are falling, but there are things you can do to help yourself achieve a higher annuity income. Importantly, you should disclose anything that might effect the rates you’re offered. See pension annuity rates for details.

You can actually help yourself to the best UK annuity rates. Whilst you do have options there is only one that really gives you the chance of the highest annuity rates. None of the other options offer you a choice. As no one company offers the best annuity rates for all situations, you’ll miss out on getting the best rates. Also, annuity rates do vary greatly between annuity providers. With something as important as your retirement income it’s crucial that you don’t limit yourself to using just one company. Company A might offer the best annuity rates for a 60 year old, but not the best rates for a 65 year old; Company B might offer the best annuity rates for a £50,000 fund, but not for £100,000; etc., etc.

If you decide against having a choice, you’ll only be offered an annuity quote from one company, which could be competitive or not, and you’ll miss out on getting the best UK annuity rates. Higher annuity rates are payable to smokers and people in poor health for the simple reason that their life expectancy is lower than it is for healthy people, so the annuity provider calculates it won’t have to pay out the annuity for so long. If you smoke, if you have been ill or if you’re only slightly overweight it is worth checking out what rates are available. It really is up to you; if you don’t mention something that matters, then it can’t be taken into account, which could cost you dearly in terms of lost annuity income.

So, help yourself to better annuity rates; use a specialist annuity service such as this to research the market for you, make sure you disclose anything to do with your lifestyle or your state of health that might effect the rates you’re offered, and consider carefully the company your pension fund is invested with, as many offer particularly poor deals in terms of annuity rates at retirement.

There are over 1,500 health conditions for higher enhanced annuity rates; conditions that will be considered for enhanced terms. For an idea of how important this is, and just how many people are effected just look at the following: the percentage of people aged 55 and over who have suffered certain medical conditions, had treatment and/or management by a medical professional, high blood pressure 40%, high cholesterol 30%, heart diseases (angina and atrial fibrillation) 13%, diabetes (types 1 and 2) 11%, stroke 7%, heart attack 7%, COPD 6%, breast cancer 4%, and prostate cancer 3%. This information is from leading enhanced annuity rates provider, MGM Advantage, June 2010.

Aston Goodey, from MGM Advantage comments that whilst it’s encouraging that so many people aged 55 and over are actually having regular health checks, it’s disappointing to learn that so few are aware that certain medical conditions would qualify them for enhanced annuity rates and therefore increased retirement incomes. In some cases, declaring a medical condition could result in an individual being thousands of pounds better off over the course of their retirement and make a real difference to their quality of life. He adds that having a health check before buying an annuity is vital, and if someone discovers they have a medical condition, it’s in their best interest to inform their prospective annuity provider.

That’s right, 75% of retirees miss out on the best UK annuity rates, and 59% could qualify for enhanced annuity rates. More than three quarters of UK adults aged 55 and over are unaware that certain types of medical conditions could entitle them to a higher level of annuity income, according to new research from MGM Advantage. The findings show that millions of people at retirement are potentially missing out on a higher income in their retirement because they’re not taking advantage of the higher annuity rates that come with enhanced annuities. Worryingly, according to the findings, 59% of people aged 55 and over claim they have a medical condition that could qualify them for enhanced annuity rates.

Only one in four people are aware that they could get higher UK annuity rates when they retire if they suffer from certain medical conditions. Four fifths of UK adults over the age of 55 claim to have had a health check within the past twelve months and 65% claim to have had one within the past six months but people are not sharing their results with their annuity providers. MGM Advantage warns that people who don’t mention any underlying health issues could risk losing out as enhanced annuities pay out on average 24% more for men and 22.7% more for women.

It’s important you know about eligibility for higher enhanced annuity rates. If you suffer from a medical condition or conditions or have lifestyle choices that will impact your life expectancy then you might well be eligible for higher enhanced annuity rates. These rates are higher because the annuity provider calculates that they will have to pay out income for a shorter period of time compared to if you were fit and healthy and of average life expectancy. To find out whether you are eligible you must complete an enhanced annuity questionnaire.

This consists of a series of short questions about your health and lifestyle such as how much you drink or smoke on a weekly basis, your blood pressure, your cholesterol level, what exercise you take and and how often and any current or previous medical conditions. Sometimes you will be asked to provide a form of evidence of past or current conditions via a report from your GP. How much the enhanced annuity rates are increased will depend on the extent to which your situation will upon impact life expectancy. Mild conditions or lifestyle choices could see your annuity income increase by around 5%. More serious medical conditions such as heart attacks can result in an income increase of around 40%.

There has been a lot of movement with enhanced and conventional annuity rates. The average rates on standard annuities fell by just less than 1% between April and June this year compared to a fall of 0.50% between January and March this year, whilst enhanced annuity rates fell 0.38% and 0.65% respectively. The difference between average standard annuity rates and enhanced annuity rates has increased from 22.7% for men in March to just over 24% in June and from 22.6% for women in March compared to 22.69% in June this year. For the first five years of retirement, this would mean a difference of around £3,800 for a man buying an annuity with a £50,000 pension fund, and just over £3,400 for a woman.

Looking at both the standard annuity and enhanced annuity markets as a whole, the difference between the top and bottom quartiles continues to widen somewhat for men but has reduced ever so slightly for women. In March 2010, the average difference for men was about 35% and this rose in June this year to 35.6%. The corresponding figures for women are 34.7%% and 33.8% respectively. This might seem a strange way of looking at enhanced annuity rates, but does enhance the need to shop around.
